Ali Marchildon and Laura Cheney, Flashbags
Flashbags is a company operating out of Burlington, Vermont. They offer an innovative line of handbags and accessories made out of paper…..yes, paper. The bags start with color copies of original images on regular paper. They laminate the images then add strength inside with 8 sheets of recycled newsprint. Images cover every panel inside and out. Each panel is embellished with colorful swoops and swirls of stitching that compliment the composition of each image.Flashbags was co-founded in 2006 by Ali Marchildon and Laura Cheney. After being introduced by mutual friends, these two former teachers teamed up to create the plan for growing Flashbags out of Ali's living room and into the real world. It started with one home sewing machine and one big idea. Flashbags has quickly grown into a socially conscious marketing/branding company that designs/manufactures customized image based products that serve as a powerful, portable billboard for artists, museums, businesses and individuals. Carry a Flashbag® and you will find that you “carry a conversation”®Flashbags are increasingly popular choices for corporate gifting and their limited edition designs are being used for specific marketing purposes or to commemorate special events or achievements. Their recent Ltd. Ed. Obama design was wildly popular at the Democratic convention and in Washington, DC for the Inauguration. The Smithsonian Museum of American History added an Obama Flashbag to their political memorabilia collection. The Obama bag design was not their first foray into the political arena. U.S. First Lady Laura Bush ordered Flashbags to help promote the nonprofit organization PlayPumps International. Their partnership with PlayPumps led Ali and Laura to realize the unique power of Flashbags to start conversations with total strangers. It opens up the perfect opportunity to talk about an organization and it’s mission. They have since partnered with other non-profits including Women for Women International, Engineers Without Borders, and Go Red for Women. Flashbags donates 10% of profits from the sale of these “benefit” bags.Flashbags have taken the fashion world by storm, and the company’s unique, hip handbags, custom totes and other “wearable art” accessories are featured in high-end boutiques and fine museum gift shops throughout the U.S. and around the world. Flashbags provide an impressionable vehicle to showcase what an individual or organization honors most and prompt conversation of shared values, stories, and creativity.
Your image, your style, your message….carry a Flashbag® and“carry a conversation.”®
